A Dialogue About the Decalogue (Pt 1)

The Ten Commandments are pretty well-known by Christians and non-Christians alike, but what do they mean and why did God give them to us?

Exodus 20:1-17

The Ten Commandments were originally given to Israel.

They reveal God’s holiness and show us how we can please Him.

They are a concise list of what the whole entire law was about.

God revels His righteous, holy standard in His law.

#1 – Have no other gods. He is the one who rescued the Israelites out of slavery. No one else.

#2 – Make no idols. This is disgraceful in the eyes of God. We could never make anything to do God justice; He is too holy and perfect.

#3 – Do not misuse the name of the Lord. Do not use His name in a way that does not promote Him. His name deserves respect. Misusing His name is done in vain.

#4 – Observe the Sabbath. He is the only God in the universe that gives you a day off. The Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27). Taking a day off shows trust in God.

#5 – Honor your father and mother.

#6 – Do not murder.

#7 – Do not commit adultery.

#8 – Do not steal.

#9 – Do not testify falsely.

#10 – Do not covet (but be content).
